Spittal is characterised by the 8550 m long Tauern tunnel.
Today it is one of the most highly used transit routes in Europe.
St. Veit an der Glan transport hub
A large section of the display is devoted to the
Sankt Veit an der Glan transport hub. A map
shows the old route up to 1912 with pictures
of the new construction and the Sankt Veit an
der Glan passenger station, which was built in
the art nouveau style and today is a listed
monument. It took until 1912 to achieve the
present-day line routings and relocate the
passenger station close to the town.
1912: Opening of the passenger station on
the Wayerfeld. In 2014 the station was
restored to its original condition – the facade
is white and the window frames are painted
green.
Glandorf station
When the Kronprinz-Rudolf-Bahn was
opened on 19 October 1868, due to the
old route layout Sankt Veit station was
located outside the town area in the little
village of Glandorf.
The station developed into an important
railway station where express trains stopped too, and even Emperor
Franz Joseph was welcomed here several times (1885, 1897, 1899 and
1907).
When the route was altered in 1912 and the passenger station was built
close to the town, the tasks undertaken at the station were relocated.
