The Gurktalbahn
The first narrow gauge railway
locomotive in Carinthia made its
maiden journey in 1898. The
Gurk Valley railway ran from
Treibach-Althofen to Klein
Glödnitz and was 28.8 km long.
Passenger traffic was
discontinued in 1968, and the
entire operation was closed in
1972.
Since 1974 the stretch of railway between Treibach-Althofen and
Pöckstein-Zwischenwässern (a length of 3.3 km) has been in operation
as the oldest museum railway in Austria.
There was also a second railway in Carinthia with a track width of 760
mm. This was the Vellachtalbahn, which ran between 1902 and 1965
(when passenger traffic was discontinued), before being entirely shut
down in 1971.
This railway led from Völkermarkt to Eisenkappel and was 17.72 km
long.
