       preserved	in	the	Romanesque	style	from	the	12 	century	are	the	parish
       church	 and	 the	 ossuary.	 Other	 noteworthy	 buildings	 such	 as	 the
       Convent	of	Poor	Clares	founded	by	Konrad	von	Auffenstein	in	1321	with

       the	convent	church,	or	the	public	hospital,	date	from	the	14 	century.

       The	 fires	 of	 1409	 and	 1497	 reduced	 almost	 all	 the
       houses	built	of	wood	to	ashes.


       Around	 1500	 the	 woodcarving	 workshop	 of	 Lienhart	 Pambstell	 was
       established,	and	in	1503/04	this	produced	an	altar	for	the	dean	of	Gurk
       Cathedral.	 10	 years	 later	 the	 St.	 Veit	 woodcarving	 workshop	 supplied
       Gurk	 Cathedral	 with	 six	 carved	 panels	 representing	 St	 Hemma,	 which
       are	still	internationally	admired	today.

       After	the	late	Gothic	carved	altars,	artistic	activity	in	St.	Veit	achieved

       further	 high	 points	 from	 the	 second	 quarter	 of	 the	 18 	 century
       onwards,	 with	 the	 already	 mentioned	 workshop	 of	 Johann	 Georg
       Bacher,	who	produced	numerous	altars,	37	of	which	are	still	preserved
       today	in	the	district	of	St.	Veit.	The	exceptional	sculptor	Johann	Georg
       Hittiner	emerged	from	his	workshop	too.

       Portrait	painter	August	Prinzhofer

       He	was	born	on	12	September	1816.
       His	talent	for	drawing	attracted	attention	while	he
       was	still	at	school.
       His	 successes	 in	 painting	 portraits	 brought	 him	 a
       large	 number	 of	 commissions,	 and	 he	 made	 the
       decision	to	move	his	place	of	residence	to	Vienna.
       He	 created	 400	 oil	 portraits	 and	 3,000	 portrait
       lithographs,	as	well	as	numerous	water	colours.
       In	1848	he	had	the	honour	of	painting	a	portrait	of	the	Emperor	Franz
       Joseph.	He	died	of	softening	of	the	brain	on	4	August	1885.
